Francisco Gerardo Peña Lecona es oriundo de la ciudad de León Guanajuato. Estudió la Ingeniería en Electrónica en el Instituto Tecnológico de Celaya de 1987 a 1991. De 1997 a 2004 cursó sus estudios de posgrado en el Centro de Investigaciones en Óptica de la cd. de León Guanajuato en el área de sensores ópticos. De enero de 2004 a diciembre del mismo año trabajó como profesor investigador en la Universidad del Valle de Atemajac Campus León con el proyecto de automatización del nuevo edificio de la misma universidad. Desde octubre de 2004 es Profesor Investigador en la Universidad de Guadalajara en el Centro Universitario de Los Lagos y, además, es Coordinador de la Maestría y el Doctorado en Ciencia y Tecnología en el mismo Centro Universitario.
Ha impartido cátedra desde el año 2000, ha dirigido varias tesis de licenciatura, ha publicado en revistas de arbitraje internacional tales como: Optics Communications, IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, Review of Scientific Instruments, Measurement Science and Technology y Applied Optics, entre otras.
Es miembro del sistema nacional de investigadores desde el año 2006; su especial área de interés científico es el de sensores y láseres basados en fibra óptica aplicados a la industria y a la medicina.
Entre sus pasatiempos favoritos se encuentra la práctica de astronomía y la divulgación de la misma.
